How Teenage Depression May be Confused with ADHD
Making the diagnosis of depression is similar to making the diagnosis of ADHD; first we must eliminate Zebras or medical problems that can cause the teen’s symptoms.

Can You Spot a Zebra?

Unfortunately, there are no blood tests, imaging studies (scans)or psychological tests that can be used to absolutely and positively diagnose ADHD or any other behavior disorder. Literally, every behavior disorder is diagnosed based on symptoms and observations.

When diagnosing ADHD, clinicians should first exclude the more than 46 other medical problems, behavioral disorders and other conditions that may mimic or act just like ADHD. Once no other condition is found responsible for the observed ADHD symptoms, American Psychiatric Association guidelines for diagnosing ADHD should be used to evaluate the suspect child or adult for inclusion as ADHD.

I use the word Zebra to refer to all the things that can act just like or look just like ADHD, because a Zebra ‘s stripes allow it to effectively hide from a hungry lion. Often, the lion looks straight at the Zebra but fails to see it because it blends so well with the tall savannah grass. The same is true of all of those ADHD mimicking conditions that might be Mistaken for ADHD, they often hide right in front of our very eyes and go undetected.
